What is Covered Yarn?

Covered Yarn is a type of yarn where a core yarn, such as Spandex (an elastic fiber), is wrapped or covered with another yarn. This process enhances the core yarn's properties, such as elasticity, strength, and appearance. By using different types of wrapping materials and methods, the Spandex core is well-protected during washing, which extends the fabric's lifespan.

Fabrics made from Covered Yarn offer excellent stretch performance to meet various requirements. The primary advantage of Covered Yarn is its ability to combine the benefits of two or more fiber components. It maximizes the core yarn's elasticity while preserving the characteristics of the outer fiber. Covered Yarn is widely used in applications such as hosiery, textiles, and medical supplies. Common types include single-covered yarn and double-covered yarn.

Types of Covered Yarn

1. Conventional Covered Yarn

   Common types of conventional covered yarn include single-covered yarn and double-covered yarn.

   • Single Covered Yarn (SCY):

     Single covered yarn involves wrapping a single layer of covering yarn around a core yarn, typically spandex. This process results in a yarn that offers moderate elasticity and strength, making it suitable for a variety of applications.

     At Herng Fa, our SCY can be customized to meet specific customer needs. The customization options include selecting different main yarns (such as functional yarn or color yarn) and matching yarns (functional yarn) to create unique SCY with either S or Z twists. The Z twist involves a clockwise turn, while the S twist is a counterclockwise turn.

     In the market, elastic fabrics are predominantly made using SCY with a Z twist. However, for products like socks and underwear, an S twist is often preferred due to the unique requirements of body structure.

     Applications: Tights, Woven Fabrics, Flat Knitting, Narrow Fabrics, Circular Knitting

   • Double Covered Yarn (DCY):

     Double covered yarn features a spandex core that is enveloped by two main yarns twisted in opposite directions—one in the Z twist (clockwise) and the other in the S twist (counterclockwise). This dual-layer wrapping technique not only enhances the durability and elasticity of the yarn but also allows for different twist angles to create a variety of fabric hand feels. The two main yarns do not have to be of the same type; different fibers and specifications can be employed to achieve the desired characteristics.
